There are renovation projects that restore a home, and there are those that elevate it into something altogether more extraordinary. Emerald House is an alteration and addition to a heritage-listed 1890s Victorian residence in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Led by Alexander &Co. under principal architect Jeremy Bull and interior designer Aimy Dodge, the project set out to honour the home’s storied past while reimagining it as a deeply personal sanctuary for a family whose love of art, nature, and entertainment informed every decision made.

The result is a theatrical, richly layered interior that moves between bold burgundy and emerald stone varieties, dark timber flooring, geometric custom rugs, and an interiors palette that feels simultaneously opulent and deeply considered. It is a home that does not shy away from colour, texture, or conviction.

Briggs Veneers’ American Oak; crown cut and finished with a custom stain applied by the skilled hands of Ample Interiors, anchors the joinery with a warmth and depth that is entirely its own. The crown cut’s broad, cathedral grain provides the formal architectural backbone of the space, while the custom stain transforms the timber into something singular, a surface that belongs to this home and no other. Paired with brass pulls, a havana-hued leather bedhead, and a storage unit of quiet masculine sophistication, the American Oak joinery brings a timeless authority to a suite designed to feel both restorative and refined.

Emerald House was recognised across some of Australia’s most prestigious design awards in 2025 – winning both Best Kitchen and Best Bathroom at the House & Garden Top 50 Rooms, with a further finalist nomination for Best Bedroom. The project was also named a finalist in the Belle Fanuli Interior Design Awards for both Best Residential Interior and Best Kitchen. Featured across Vogue Living, House & Garden, and Belle, it stands as one of the most celebrated residential projects of the year; a home that will only grow more beautiful with time, and one that reminds us what is possible when heritage, craft, and material excellence are held in equal regard.
