Set within the iconic Observatory Tower in the heart of Sydney, the JD Apartment is a quietly transformative renovation by Paredes Design Studio; a reimagining of a 1990s atrium and interior that speaks to the enduring appeal of considered, unhurried design. The brief was clear: to redefine the apartment as an elegant private residence that honours its extraordinary context, capturing enviable views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House while crafting an interior that feels as permanent and timeless as the city it overlooks.

Natural materials form the soul of the renovation. Travertine grounds the space with the cool, geological depth of ancient stone, while Briggs Veneers’ American Oak, crown cut and bookmatched, brings the warmth and symmetry of traditional timber joinery to the cabinetry and interior surfaces. The mirrored unfolding of the crown cut grain is a deliberate aesthetic choice; evoking the classic joinery of another era, where timber was selected, matched, and applied with the patience of a craftsman rather than the pace of a fitout. It is a material that does not simply fill a space, it anchors it, lending the apartment a sense of rootedness and timeless elegance that no contemporary finish could replicate.

The result is an interior of refined urban luxury; one that draws as much from the craft traditions of the past as it does from the clean lines of the present, and one that will only grow more beautiful with time.
