There are interiors that reference food, and then there are interiors that become it. The Merrylands Snack Shoppe by Killing Matt Woods falls firmly into the latter – a space where the design concept is worn so lightly, so wittily, that it only reveals itself on closer inspection, like the layers of a perfectly laminated croissant.

The conceit is elegant in its simplicity; Briggs Veneers’ Spotted Gum; quarter cut, joined in a deliberate mismatch that lines the interior with the warm, tonal variation of freshly baked pastry. The quarter cut reveals the timber’s fine, straight grain, while the mismatch join plays across the surface in alternating bands of light and shadow; a visual rhythm that unmistakably echoes the glazed, golden-to-amber tonal shifts of a croissant straight from the oven. It is local Australian timber doing something quietly extraordinary: evoking the warmth of a patisserie through nothing more than the honest character of its own grain and the considered hand of those who specified it.

The result is a space that is fun without being frivolous, refined without being earnest — a nod to the craft of pastry making rendered in the craft of timber. Exactly the kind of design intelligence that has defined Killing Matt Woods’ approach to hospitality since the very beginning.
